REQUESTS FOR COMMISSIONING & PULL LETTERS
Following are prerequisites for these letters*:
1. We accept your idea
2. Your stylist has an immaculate reputation with PR companies
3. We have final approval on your model(s) prior to your shoot (we would like to see options/packages, not a single model).
4. You provide a mood board outlining the story and style
5.
You accept we may not run your story if it's not as per your proposal
6. You have all any required insurances, as appropriate
7. Model releases/permissions are in place
8. You commit to deliver all required content by your agreed deadline
12 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SUBMITTING
Not rules, just ideas and things to think about, this is what we think about when reviewing stories:
1. Which section are you submitting to? (Fashion, Photography, Illustration, Rising Stars / Profiles, News or another).
2. Do you realistically have enough images to make a coherent story? Ideally you will have at least 12-18 individual 'final' images. We may not use them all.
3. If fashion, are you aiming high street or high fashion or a mix? We need to ensure the magazine carries both - so do pick credible, current (or very retro) brands and designers. If high-fashion think about which season we're in or coming into, is it new and fresh enough or have every magazine run the same pictures...
4. Do you have the right mix of images e.g. pictures taken landscape as well as portrait, full-length, three quarter length, profiles, close up etc.
What's the quality of the images?
5. How well do you think your story fits the magazine theme? Maybe one of the future themes work better. (see below for themes).
6. Is your story current, credible and does it work within the style of Fiasco?
7. Do you have enough time to bring together the team, shoot the story, send over the drafts and then prepare the final work within the deadlines (with credits)?
8. Are you comfortable with the Fiasco team cropping your beautiful works of art and maybe sequencing it different to how you want it (we do that!)?
9. Are you happy for your prized story to be used to promote the magazine? this is required... covers get you noticed, do you have a killer picture?
10. Will you be able to cope with honest feedback on your work? It might not be what we're looking for... Don't take it personally :-)
11. Don't submit a handful of images all with the same outfit. We need to see choice, e.g. at least 12 uniquely different images with multiple outfit changes (at least 4 across the story). In addition ensure you have options for each of the 12 images!
12. Do not leave it to the deadline to supply your story, this is the FINAL content deadline which means you need to be talking to us in advance of this deadline.
REASONS WHY WE REJECT SUBMISSIONS, DONT REPLY TO ALL SUBMISSIONS OR SIMPLY DON'T PUBLISH IT
We try very hard to reply to everyone, but with the volume of submissions this can sometimes be difficult. Below we've outlined some of the standard replies and reasons for us not getting back to you or your work not making the cut.
1. When you submitted you didn't say which issue or theme e.g. you just sent a link to your website, or attached some pictures without any background information.
2. You did not take account of the information provided on this page
(See section above called 'Things to consider when submitting'.
3. The submission is the same or similar to another we are currently planning for the issue.
4. If we have accepted your idea or submission, but then you find its been dropped - It could be a simple case that we reached the maximum size of pages for our print run, or the digital version became too big.
5. Your editorial appears in the Digital version but not in the Print copy? This is because our print copy is smaller owing to costs and practicality of size, we have to edit the issue down and some stories unfortunately will not make both editions.
6. The quality or style of the images is not right for our magazine.
7. Your submission does not conform to any of our up-coming themes, or does not merit (in our opinion), being included outside of a theme.
SUBMITTING FINAL WORK (UPDATED):
We require the following:
1. All credits, including anyone involved in the pictures/story, in broad terms (e.g. Photographer, Models and their agency names if appropriate, Brands, Designers, Artists, Hair, Makeup, Stylists, Designers, prop-markers, Location Credits and Assistants etc.) - These need to be supplied in MS Word format, typed in uppercase with the item first followed by the credit. e.g. PHOTOGRAPHER JANE SMITH or SUIT PAUL SMITH, as this is how they appear in the magazine and will save us time. Ideally if you can embed each image with the credits underneath this would avoid errors.
If you're supplying your images in PDF format, make sure you use a standard font, and check the credits can be copied and pasted into a word doc.
2. What you would like the story to be called based on the issue theme and feel of the pictures selected, plus any intro text you might like (we can do this for you if you would prefer).
3. If you would like a link included to your Website / Flickr?
4. Image Specifications:
High resolution Images - 300dpi minimum.
JPG or TIFF File Formats.
Dimensions
A4 - Single Pages - 210 x 297mm or 8.3 x 11.7 in (W x H).
A3- Double Page Spreads - 297 x 420mm or 11.7 x 16.5 in (H x W).
Include a 3mm bleed if supplying to the exact dimensions.
Color Spaces -
Both RGB & CMYK formats are now required.
Do not supply images with boarders, watermarks, text on or credits written on the images (unless previously agreed as part of the submission), they will be added by us in the magazine style.
Do not supply images with boarders or white space, just the image.
5. Please use simple naming for the images so we can match them to credits easily.
6. A couple of paragraphs about you too please / Bio.
7. Please send us the images via a website such as yousendit.com or similar. If need be we can supply our FTP details on request.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Free magazine copies - We do not give free copies of the magazine just because work is published, this is purely based on cost. If we gave them to all members of every team on each issue, plus PR companies, agencies and designers, we would be out of business. We are happy to provide Print Quality PDFs for portfolios, alternatively where you can buy copies. We wish we could afford to give copies, but for now we can't.
Embargo on images - Do not post images online of your approved editorial before FIASCO goes to publication. If you do, we reserve the right to pull the story for the issue or request you take them down until after publication.
* Obtaining a commissioning letter or pull letter/letter of responsibility does not mean we will publish your editorial story online or in print. Final decision sits with the editor at time of going to press or publishing the digital version. We also reserve the right to change which issue your editorial goes in. Any expenses or costs of your shoot are at your own risk, please do not undertake a shoot in our name unless you can afford the loss, should it happen.
